| The residential course organised by United Martial Arts, held in Skegness is an annual event on the calendar for martial artists in the North of England and attracts a firm following each year. Attending this year was a young man who demonstrates tremendous determination and will to succeed in his training. John Egan, Ju Jutsu 2nd dan is completely blind, yet took a full part in the challenging programme lead by UMA senior instructor Norman Sangwin. John, who has been training since 1990 and was awarded his 2nd Dan on the course, accepts no special treatment in training and serves as a tremendous example to any student whether able bodied or disabled in any way. Our first photo shows John throwing Neil Till, under the supervision of instructors Colin Sangwin, 7th Dan and Noel Till, 4th Dan. The second shows John about to deliver a strike. For a shining example of just how much one can achieve through hard, diligent training look no further than John Egan. Our congratulations on your achievements to date and good luck for the future. | ||

Athens will host the 2004 Olympic Games, and the Greek Sports Ministry has launched a plan to gain demonstration status for a revived version of Pankatrion, a combined boxing and wrestling sparring format which was included in the programme of the original Olympic Games in classical Greece. The revived format plans to offer a multi-style competition format allowing kick-punch and grapple-throw systems to compete under a single system of rules. Madec Chairman Richard Thomas, has recently been appointed Vice President of the European Pankatrion Federation and asked to form a UK Pankatrion Federation. The Greek Sports Ministry is hosting an international congress in mid April which will formally launch he campaign to win recognition for Pankatrion from the International Olympic Committee. 'I was delighted to receive the invitation to take an active role in this exciting opportunity for the martial arts. The invitation reflects the status Madec is beginning to establish internationally and I am very excited to be part of a project which hopefully see the establishment of a set of universal all styles competition rules and perhaps UK martial artists competing at the 2004 Olympic Games. See our next edition for a full report on the Founding Congress of the International Pankatrion Federation. | |

| At the United Martial Arts Annual Camp the presentation of a 7th Dan was made to Colin Sangwin. Our picture shows Colin together with his father, Norman, 9th Dan and brother Richard, 5th Dan. Colin is one of other most regular attendees at meetings of the Madec Council and Corporate Forum. He is a very popular and widely respected instructor and his promotion considered well deserved, reflecting his work for the UMA and the promotion of the martial arts nationally. | ||

| 2nd OPEN MASTERS COURSE | ||
| The second ZMAA Open Masters course was held in October 1998 and featured guest instructors Walter Seaton (Wado Ryu Karate), Vince Thompson (Aikido) Tom Fletcher (Myabi Ryu Ju Jitsu) plus Ziegrfred Benkel and Salvatori Minelli (All Style Jitsu) from Germany. Walter Seaton's session presented the finer points and principles of Wado Ryu. The students represented a cross section of traditional and modern systems, but all benefited from the expertise and experience of one of Britain's longest serving and most respected instructors. Vince Thompson taught Aikido to a cross section of Karate, Ju-Jitsu and Kickboxing students, most with no previous experience of Aiki. Vince, a very popular and respected instructor was very well received, a reflection of his qualities as a first class technician and his popularity as a respected senior instructor. | ||

| Tom Fletcher taught his unique style of Ju-Jitsu with characteristic wit and charm. He executed a series of extremely effective wrist restraints against a wide range of attacks including grabs, punches and knives, presenting them in such a way that students from Karate and Kick-boxing were able to relate the use of these less familiar techniques to their own disciplines. Masters' Ziegfred Benkel and Salvatori Minelli (photograph left) taught elements of their self defence system drawing on Ziegfred's more than 30 years experience in Taekwondo, Ju-Jitsu, Judo and Aikido. The course concluded with a series of presentations by Phil Milner and Walter Seaton which included Ziegfred Benkel being awarded 7th Dan The ZMAA open course is one of the only events of its size and status in the Yorkshire area where martial artists of whatever style art of political affiliation can come together and learn from high class instructors. | ||

| The success of the course, with over 250 students attending reflects the hard work and professionalism of the instructors; the hard work of the organisers and the enthusiasm of the course participants. The ZMAA also hold smaller open courses throughout the year. The next course with Master Sakagami, 7th Dan Wado Ryu Karate is scheduled for 13th March 1999. The 3rd Open Master Course is scheduled for October. | ||

RICK CLARK HITS THE SPOT! |
||
![]() |
||
| Sensei Rick Clark of Illinois, USA is an internationally acclaimed instructor with an exceptionally impressive CV holding an 8th Dan in Ryukyu Kempo, 7th Dan in Taekwondo and Ju-jutsu, together with Dan grades in Hapkido, Judo and Escrima. His 'speciality' is the application of 'Kyusho Jutsu' or Vital Points and in recent years he has been a regular visitor to the UK. In November 1998 Richard Thomas and his Kuro Matsu association hosted Sensei Clark's first seminar for Madec members at the Featherstone Sports Centre, Southall. Members from a number of Madec associations attended, representing a wide range of styles including Shotokan, Wado-Ryu, Choi Kwang Do, Taekwondo and several Kung Fu systems. The seminar was a great success. Sensei Clark has a very unorthodox and informal teaching style, but soon won over all of the course members as he worked through a series of applications of strikes and manipulations of vital points located on the meridians recognised in traditional Chinese medicine. The proof of this system is in feeling the effects of strikes to your own points. They work! See the photo of Rick and stunned Madec Chairman Richard Thomas. Rick returns to the United Kingdom in June and will be giving a seminar, in Ealing, hosted by Gideon Hajioff. All Madec members are welcome to attend and further information can be requested care of the Madec Office. | ||
