| The United Kingdom Muay Thai Federation was appointed in a formal ceremony last year as the British representative for Muay Thai by the World Muay Thai Council. UKMTF and MADEC Chairman, Richard Thomas and Edna Jewell, office administrator, attended the ceremony and were priviledged to watch a demonstration by Michael. Confidence in him then was evident and he went on to prove his ability by bringing home the World title. | |

| The WMTC officers being so impressed with their demonstration they insisted on them being in the photograph. The two boys were brothers and took part in the display bouts with their father, who must have been very appreciative of the protective padding he wore against the blows rained on him. They were very impressive and deserving of the complimentary medals presented to them. Their demonstrations were followed by one from the now World Super Light Heavyweight Champion, Michael Dempster, as shown on the front page. Among the many guests attending the celebrations were approximately eighty plus representatives from all the United Kingdom Muay Thai Federation member camps showing their respect for the honour of this visit from the World Muay Thai Council. | |

|
| The hosts, Mr and Mrs Hart, provided entertainment and refreshments for the remainder of the day from the stirring wail of the bagpipes to a display collection of classic cars on the lawns all followed by an English tea. It was a very exciting day, and a milestone in the development of Muay Thai in the United Kingdom. MADEC has been proud to have supported the UKMTF and to have assisted them in achieving recognition by the World Muay Thai Council as the United Kingdom representative for Muay Thai. | |
| NIPPON KEMPO EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS | |
| Unlike other traditional Japanese combat arts such as Karate, Judo, and Aikido, in over 65 years of existence Nippon Kempo has spread only to France, Italy, USA and Mexico. In 1992, to mark the 60th anniversary of the founding of Nippon Kempo, the United Kingdom Nippon Kempo Association (ANK) organised and hosted in London the first ever Nippon Kempo event to take place outside of Japan. The UK won the day to become the first World champions of Nippon Kempo. The second international event was held in England in 1996 and as a result of all groups coming together the Federation of European Nippon Kempo Associations (FENKA) was formed with Italy hosting the inaugural presidency. Also hosting this year's inaugural championships in Cassano Magnano, near Milan in May 1998. All presidents of FENKA associations and their teams attended making the event exciting and a tremendous success with the host, Italy, winning the championships and the United Kingdom coming second. The United Kingdom Nippon Kempo team were: Mark Winterson, Gary White, Mark Cripps, Neil Kells and Lee Douglas. Luther De Gale, Chairman of Nippon Kempo was extremely pleased with the result but expressed some reservations observing technical differences in training methods which although not standing in the way of the synergy of the European Association, needed a synthesis of all the groups' 'Criteria of Judgment' which would, when in place, set the scene for events of excellence of skill, technique, strategy, and pure sportsmanship. | AIMAA SEMINAR, WITH GRANDMASTER HEE IL CHO | |
|
|
|
| It has
been a little over four years since Grandmaster Hee Il Cho last visited
the UK. In that time this amazing Grandmaster has shown us, through his
Tae Kwon Do, the ability to remain loyal and follow his teaching, giving
us the strength to grow from thirty-three students in the West country,
the first in the UK to represent A.I.M.A.A, to a membership well over four
figures. During 1997 alone just under 800 students registered from
throughout the UK. These members enjoy the support of affiliates from
Ireland, Jersey and Germany adding to its unity. Grandmaster Hee Il Cho's career within British martial arts has been long and fruitful. He has always been in the fore front of innovating and developing Tae Kwon Do and with every visit to the UK has brought us something new. This most recent seminar was without doubt one of his most progressive. The first leg of his European tour started in Dublin to which representatives from the UK were invited by Mr John Darcy, Ireland Regional Director, to take part. Members flew out to greet and train with Grandmaster Cho returning enthused and ready for Hee Il Cho's long awaited arrival in the UK. Mr Ian H Clode, UK Regional Director, hosted this first A.I.M.A.A seminar and grading at the Hutton Moor Leisure Centre, Weston-Super-Mare. Some 250 students travelled from all over the UK and Jersey to take part in the three hour seminar. Representatives from Judo, Jiu Jitsu and Karate also took advantage of the opportunity to train with Grandmaster Hee Il Cho, who for the first time was accompanied by three of his top students from across the USA. The first section of the seminar was taken by Grandmaster Hee Il Cho and covered line work, footwork and kicking. The second section was instructed by Master Philip Ameris 6th Dan. Master Ameris shared his experience of grappling and self defence techniques many of which have never been practised or taught in UK before. Since returning to the USA Master Ameris has received an invitation to take part in the 'Ultimate Challenge' scheduled for March of this year. To end the seminar each Regional Manager was presented by Grandmaster Hee Il Cho with an award of appreciation for their dedicated support and development of the Association within the UK. The promotional test which took place on the Saturday, just eleven hours after the previous evenings seminar included recently introduced line work and self defence techniques. Patterns, destruction and philosophy made up the grading which students tested for in front of a truly International examination panel. The grading examiners included : Mr John Darcy 5th Dan (Ireland), Mr Alex Ziwak 5th Dan (USA), Master Philip Ameris 6th Dan (USA), Grandmaster Hee Il Cho 9th Dan (USA), Mr Ian H Clode 4th Dan (England) and Ms Nellie Ziwak 4th Dan (USA). To round off this inspiring weekend, a meal for senior students and instructors took place at a local four star hotel. Here, Mr Clode presented Grandmaster Hee Il Cho with a commemorative plaque on behalf of grateful instructors and students throughout the UK. The atmosphere was less formal and gave everybody the opportunity to exchange views across the dinner table with Grandmaster Cho and guests. Topics such as the introduction of a new belt structure to the UK and the expansion of Grandmaster Cho's literature range were discussed informally, a fitting end to this long awaited return of a great master |
